FAQ's
I started my apprenticeship with Action Sports of Texas in 1996 in Midland, Texas. My passion is the custom 1911 platform tailored for Open Class USPSA shooting, as this was my first interest in competitive shooting. As pistol shooting lead to other disciplines such as 3-Gun, Sportsman’s Team Challenge and PRS style shooting; my focus broadened to include hand-made AR style rifles and long-range bolt guns.
I build everything from scratch with a manual mill, manual lathes and hand tools. I believe customers appreciate that they can discuss their projects with me at any time from start to finish. I’m the only person who will be working on their guns, so communication is straightforward.
By far, the greatest growth in the shooting sports has been the explosion of popularity in long-range shooting and hunting. In fact, precision rifles have accounted for the majority of Precision Matters builds over the last decade.
As your gunsmith I have to be good at vetting the components I use in a project because my reputation is at stake on every build. I believe that’s the way it should be.
The best way to test components is to use them but for those without this option, I urge people to search for product reviews by competitive shooters. Competitive shooting sports absolutely drive firearms innovation and industry.
.75 MOA on AR-type and .5 MOA on bolt guns using the components I recommend*.
*For example, I use single-point, cut-rifled barrels for centerfire precision rifle builds (ie Bartlein, Krieger, Rock). This is not an exhaustive list and I’m always happy to discuss them with any customer who is interested.
It’s pretty simple, really. In short, think “Inside/Out”. I’ll use a PRS build as an example:
I focus on components in this order: 1) Barrel, 2) Action and 3) Chassis/Stock & 4) Trigger
For most people the chassis (or stock) a rifle sits in seems to be the most import consideration, since that is the interface between the rifle and us. Ergonomics are critical to accuracy (hitting one’s target). But the barreled action is what truly drives precision (the rifle’s ability to repeat the same point of impact, ceteris paribus). If you have precision, you can develop accuracy with proper practice.
I also like to pinpoint any and all of a customer’s “must haves”. Using the same PRS build as an example, I must have an AW cutout on my match rifle action because I don’t like loading center feed mags. The magazine cutout is not a consideration for most who run AICS mags, but it is for me!
I do not currently have a “production model” that is mass produced. I’ve worked with more than one CNC shop over the last decade, but unfortunately those efforts suffered derailment before any production of significant scale took place. I am still searching for the right opportunity/shop to partner with.
However, there are plenty of discriminating shooters who want a handmade suppressor to complement their handmade rifles, so; I offer a 100% handmade suppressor that is 100% Titanium and 100% user serviceable. I also make a 7075 aluminum monocore .22 LR suppressor that utilizes a durable stainless steel tube that is incredibly easy to maintain.
The answer is simple and is based on whether or not you reload, how far you’re shooting and what the target is.
Once we answer those questions, then I will ask some questions to get a bit deeper into the answer. For example, how recoil-averse are you? Are you carrying it over great distances – or just from the safe to the truck? Is this for hunting or shooting matches? Believe it or not, it’s pretty simple to make the right call. However, it’s very much like us as shooters to simply want to try new things – which is fine if you can afford the learning curve for a new cartridge and the additional expense of new or even custom dies.
Regardless, the only limits are your imagination and wallet. I’ll be happy to design or help design any custom project you can think of – including reamer(s), dies and necessary modifications.
